Introduction: A Visit to Otuabagi – The Cradle of Nigeria’s Oil Discovery
On January 31, 2025, a field trip was organized as a continuation of the Media-Community Dialogue on Renewable Energy Democracy. The group, led by Prince Israel Orekha, embarked on a visit to Otuabagi, a community in Ogbia LGA, Bayelsa State. This community holds a significant place in Nigeria’s history, as it is the location where oil was first discovered in commercial quantity in the country. Otuabagi, like many other oil-producing communities in the Niger Delta, has faced devastating consequences from oil exploration and exploitation. The community has borne the brunt of environmental degradation with over 18 oil wells in operation and subsequent abandonment after the resources were depleted.
Despite its historical significance, the residents of Otuabagi have been systematically neglected, living in what can only be described as exploitation and abandonment. This field trip aimed to amplify the voices of the women, elders, and community leaders, highlighting the need for a just transition to renewable energy. The aim was to not only raise awareness about the impact of oil exploration on the community but also advocate for renewable energy solutions that could provide a path to recovery and sustainability.
